Why the Sloth is My Favorite Animal

My friend Stella told me I should write a blog about why the sloth is my favorite animal. So this is for you, Stella.

First, a little about this animal. The sloth is really slow...so slow that moss grows on its fur sometimes. I just read on Wikipedia that the name that the Ecuadorian tribes use for this animal means "eat," "sleep," and "dirty." They have to move slowly because all they eat is leaves, and this doesn't give them much energy. (But they do get to see the forest in much greater detail.) As far as I can tell, they don't have any major predators, and the only real danger they seem to face is the disappearance of their rainforest homes...which is kind of a big deal, but it's not like people are after their fur at least.

So why is it my favorite? Because I don't think the sloths have much to worry about. Minus the stigma of the sin of "sloth" mentioned in Proverbs, I think the sloth has got it figured out. Take life slow, be vegetarian, and be a tree-hugger in the rainforest. No worries.

Plus, they're kinda cute.

  1. He hee he. Good call on that one. I don't think people are after their furs because it has moss. What if next time we get to hang out we take it and make it a sloth day all day. Ahh, sounds nice.

  2. In this high stress world, I think more people need to preach the benefits of just slowing down. Nice pick of animals Andrea.

  4. I saw some in Costa Rica, and they also said they're ferocious when they have to be, their claws are intense. That might not be true, and it doesn't ruin the paradigm, because you'd be ferocious if you had to as well.
