Inertia

If you look up inertia definition in Google, you'll find this popping up:  "A tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged."  This word has been circling my brain like a vulture over the last couple days, as I try to make a decision that could affect at least the next six months of my life, but have been feeling some resistance.  It seems like it's more than just a resistance of fear or knowing if this is God's will...I think it might just be plain inertia.  It's time to change, but I don't want to.

As much as I hated Physics in high school (the first class I ever dropped in my academic career), Newton had it right with his first law of motion: "An object in motion stays in motion (or an object at rest stays at rest)...unless acted upon by an external, unbalanced force."  Mercy.  Ain't that the truth.  This is why it's easier to stay on facebook instead of doing something productive.  This is what tempts us to run out of time to exercise or call someone or forgive.  This is why I spend more time thinking of people I should tell about my situation (to ask them to pray, of course!), and writing a blog, than trying to think through the issue and tackle it with prayer, God's word, and some wise counsel.

So whatever comes of this decision, Lord, help me to conquer inertia.  Let this at least be a catalyst to propel me out of the land of talking about what kind of person You want me to be, and into the land of being that person.  There is a fine line between pausing to heal and listen, and falling asleep.  Lord, awaken me to the world you're calling me to serve again.  I think I'm ready...almost...

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.  (2 Tim. 1:7, NLT)

  1. There's also another word: Momentum. Just starting something will help you gain it. And once you have momentum going, especially with God's power, you will be an unstoppable force.
    Love you lots,
    Dad
