It Takes a Village
…to send a missionary. A missionary might look like the brave soldier going off to the battlefield alone, but the truth is that behind each missionary is a special group of people that make it possible. Here are a few in my village:
1. My parents. These people have been incredible. They are willing to take me in on any notice for as long as I need between missions. They make me feel welcome, loved, comfortable, fed, listened-to, advised, and prayed-for. They even help me prepare for my next round of service, even though it means we have to say goodbye all over again. And all for free! I could not be a missionary without my parents.
2. My brother and sister-in-law. Even though I don’t get to see them as much, the time that I do get to spend with them is invaluable. The conversations we have on the phone have helped me see things in a new light, and given me hope and faith when I felt like mine had faded. Hearing their prayers for me, and knowing they continue when I’m not around, reminds me I am not alone in my mission.
3. My grandmothers. From faithful prayer warriors to comfort-food-senders and financial supporters, my grandmothers have been cheering me on each step of the way. They worry sometimes about my safety and if or when I will get married, but I think it’s kind of sweet. Especially since they are good at turning their worries into prayers.
4. Other family members. Whether it’s a short note on facebook, a card, phone call, or in-person conversation, my relatives are constantly letting me know that they are proud of me and supporting me in my decision to follow God’s leading to random places in the world. I’m proud to represent our genetic pool across the ocean.
5. Church members and friends. Encouragement from old friends or church members helps me feel like I am a part of something bigger than myself or even my family. They invest their prayers on my behalf, and give me words of hope that stay close to me.
6. Givers. I am always amazed that my financial needs are met so graciously and quickly whenever the need arises. Some who donate are old friends, others might be people I’ve only met a few times, but each of them has a special place in their heart for missions, and show it with their gifts. God uses them at just the right time, and it builds my faith.
7. People at the mission post. Obviously, there need to be people to serve. But what a blessing it is when those you serve and those you serve with bring beauty and laughter and so many life lessons. They are the fuel for the fire God has put in my heart.
8. Jesus. Where could I possible start with how God is involved in this kind of life? From the desire and calling to His faithful provision, Jesus is involved in everything. He is not a part of missionary life—He IS missionary life. There is no life, no vision without Him. Though mission life might be hard, and there might be sacrifices to make, it is all worth it. He has given me more than I could ever give back, so I will do what I can with the little I have to give Him.
And I pray that Jesus will bless this little village I represent.

Amen =)
